NJ may extend school year due to snow days

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - School districts across New Jersey are running out of snow days.

With another storm in the forecast for Thursday, that could mean that schools turn to a variety of options to make up for the missed classroom time.

A federal mandate requires that students spend at least 180 days in school per year.

Among the possibilities being considered in the Ft. Lee school district, where they have already taken twice as many snow days as were built into the calendar: classes on Saturdays, longer school days, a shorter spring break, or lengthening the school year.

A change in the school calendar could impact family vacations, summer camps, religious obligations, cultural activities, sports and family time.
