CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Metra announced Martin J. Oberman as the new chairman of the Board of Directors on Tuesday afternoon.

"I am honored and humbled to earn the respect and the votes of my fellow board members," Oberman said in a press release in response to the election. "I feel that all of us on the board are ready to move this agency forward in consensus and unison."

Oberman was a former Chicago alderman, serving in Chicago's 43rd Ward from 1975 to 1987, and has had a long career as a leader of the reform effort in politics, Metra officials said.

Oberman was appointed to the board by Mayor Rahm Emanuel in September 2012.

Oberman said he likes the direction the board has taken since the resignations.

He said he wants Metra to be just a railroad with no politics involved.
