CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Child welfare officials are investigating the mother of a 20-month-old boy taken to the hospital Thursday with multiple burns in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side.

The incident occurred about 7:45 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Cornell Avenue, Chicago Police said.

The baby suffered burns to the head, face and chest, police said. He was taken to University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital, where he is listed in critical condition.

It was not immediately known how the burns occurred and police are questioning several people who were in the building at the time.

The state Department of Child and Family Services is investigating the boy's mother for allegations of neglect, spokeswoman Veronica Resa said.

The agency has had no prior reports regarding the family, and there are no other children in the home, she said.

No one is in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.
