Emanuel shoots down car-free Mag Mile plan

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is saying no way to a plan that would shut down parts of Michigan Avenue to cars.

One civic group wants to expand bike lanes and walkways on 20 Chicago streets including the Mag Mile.

Many of those streets would be closed to car traffic.

State Street was closed between 1979 and 1996 when it was turned into a car-free zone.

That plan actually drove traffic and business away from the area and the city was forced to reopen the street.
