MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A suburban New York lawmaker said riding bicycles or motorcycles on the street in eastern Long Island is too dangerous.
Suffolk County legislator Thomas Barraga made the claim in a letter to the son of a Long Island woman who was injured by a car while bicycling.
Newsday reported that Barraga contends no one in Suffolk County should ever ride a bike or motorcycle on county roads.
He said drivers expect to see other drivers on the road, not bicycles or motorcycles.
The teenager wrote to the lawmaker suggesting bike lanes or signs warning drivers to be careful.
The executive director of the New York Bicycling Coalition said cycling fatalities in Suffolk made up almost 20 percent of the state's total.
