Detroit Water and Sewerage Dept. to get help with water main breaks

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) -

The list of water main breaks in Detroit has grown steadily over this winter. Many neighborhoods and busy streets have turned into rushing, slushy rivers. Now, Detroit's Department of Water and Sewerage will get some much needed assistance.

The Board of Water Commissioners has awarded a $4.2 million contract to Blaze Contracting, Inc. to help aid in detection and repair of broken water mains in the city.

The contract is still pending full board approval.

"The extreme cold weather, record snowfall and accumulated ice impede our ability to excavate, locate and repair faulty pipes in a timely manner," said DWSD Director Sue McCormick in a news release. "Mother Nature is contributing to a backlog that we are compelled to address in the most expeditious manner to prevent water loss and ensure that customers are not without water service."

The plan includes a greater public focus on the use of the 24/7 hotline, adding personnel to allow for 24/7 coverage in the central yard and assessing equipment and training needs.
