CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 23-year-old man was found shot to death in a stairwell in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side on Thursday night.

Officers responding to calls of a person shot in the 0-100 block of South Mason Avenue about 10:40 p.m. found the victim unresponsive in a stairwell, police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro said.

Regimond Maxwell Jr. of the 1500 block of South Harding Avenue suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:59 p.m., according to Alfaro and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

An autopsy Friday showed he died of multiple gunshot wounds and ruled the death a homicide, the medical examiner's office said.

No one was in custody as Area North detectives investigate.
