Atlanta Fire Department requesting funds for technology upgrade

Posted: Updated:

The Atlanta Fire Department is looking at a big price tag to correct some issues.

A report from The Commission on Fire Accreditation says one point in need of improvement is the time it takes for fire fighters to respond to your call for help.

The reports says the city has not been operating like a big city fire department should.

For example, police cars in Atlanta are equipped with GPS. The fire trucks are not.

The panel says that if the trucks had GPS, dispatch would know which trucks were closest to the scene.

Atlanta Fire Chief Kelvin Cochran said, "We were still relying on outdated technology, and in a lot of cases, from a human perspective, we were missing time stamps as it relates to dispatch times, en route times, and on-scene times."

Documents show the fire department requested funds from Atlanta City Council on Wednesday.

The cost for these technology upgrades - $647,000.
