Performance artists live together on a big wheel

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The thoughts of life on a hamster wheel seems boring but not for two Brooklyn artists who are spending 10 days living like this as part of an art exhibit. Alex Schweder gave us the grand tour of the 25-foot wheel he's called home since Friday.

"This is my favorite place which is of course the bed and Ward and I have been sleeping quite well in here," Schweder said.

Scheweder's partner Ward Shelley is living up on top of the wheel in the performance art project they call "in orbit."

"When you call it a hamster wheel, people also ask us, well are you going to wear furry suits?" Shelley said.

Actually the artists say, the project has nothing to do with a hamster wheel or the metaphor of life on a treadmill.

"It's really about how we relate to one another in a building," Shelly said. "I thought it was about balance but turns out to be about trust."

One person can't move without the other. So if, say, Schweder wants to sit on a chair he has to send up a warning. They collaborate to eat, sleep, and even use a special bathroom on the wheel that has a curtain for privacy.

And they've had plenty of company. Since the opening hundreds have come to the Pierogi Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to take a look for themselves.

"Initially I was laughing looking at it looking I the Internet that it was a stunt," said Selome Samuel. "Now I see it's kind of interesting exploration of life and balance and how delicate that can be."

As for those not convinced that this is art?

"If they think it's silly, I say that's probably true it is silly and one of the definitions of art might be do a dumb thing in a difficult way," Shelly said.

Schweder and Shelley will be on the wheel for the public to see until Sunday at 6 p.m.

Making New York City more energy efficient

More than half the population of New York City rides public transportation to work. No other metropolis in this country even approaches that percentage or the MTA's total number of riders. For that reason, New York likely ranks as the most energy-efficient city in the nation. But what would it take to make the city even more energy-efficient or even self-sufficient?
