The story starts with a mugging at knife point on New York's Staten Island.

The victim survived got a good look at his attacker: a young, white man with an unmistakable mark on his face -- a bright red lightning bolt from the forehead to the mouth.

Police searched the database and found 28-year-old New York resident Dylan Vok.

Only Dylan says he's innocent and he can prove it - because he moved to Detroit months before the crime happened.

The case seemed pretty open and shut, though. Vok was already in New York's criminal database, having been arrested once for vandalizing several cars with a skateboard and again for possession of weapon.

"I was transporting a sword because I couldn't keep it in the area anymore, and the police arrested me for being in possession of it," he tells FOX 2's Maurielle Lue. He says the sword was a prop for his park theater performance group.

Hoping to turn his life around, Vok says he moved to Detroit in October of 2011, three months before the robbery on Staten Island.

Police put Vok's picture in a photo line-up next to a few other men with Photoshopped red lighting bolt tattoos. The victim identified Vok as the attacker.

So, Vok knew he had to solve this case on his own by proving he was in Detroit at the time of the crime.

He mailed every time stamped receipt he could find to his public defender in New York. He found surveillance from his job at a chiropractor's office. He says he even sent time-stamped date logs from Facebook matching the IP addresses to the computer he was using.

"Who would possibly try to make it seem like I committed a crime like that? What's the real truth behind it? That's what I really want to know," Vok says. "I think it was someone with a grudge against me."
