A new installation of solar panels is being completed at the Milford Tree Farm in Lyon Township.

The project is part of DTE Energy's SolarCurrents program, and the 3,000 panel project make it their largest solar installation so far.

Rene Dimitry, the Vice President of Marketing and Renewables at DTE, says solar technology only makes up about 2 percent of DTE's renewable energy portfolio, but this installation represents a $3.5 million investment.

"It's only a small part of our program because it is still so much more expensive than other renewables, but we wanted to make sure we knew how to build it, how it works, and this is one of those projects," says Dimitry.

The company's goal is to have 10 percent of all electricity provided by renewable resources by 2015 to meet the state standard.

FOX 2's Robin Schwartz reports the majority of the solar panels are installed at this point. After that, they'll finish the wiring and hooking the system up to the grid. The entire project is expected to be completed by May.

In all, DTE has spent more than one billion dollars on renewable energy, most of it in wind power. This is the 19th solar project in southeast Michigan. When it's completed, the solar panels will generate enough energy to power 150 homes.

DTE has a 20 year contract with the property owner.
