Young Kangaroo Makes His Debut In Sydney

Posted: Updated:

The endangered Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo is just taking his first peek out of his momma's pouch at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia.

The species is native to the forests of New Guinea and primarily snacks on leaves, fruits, and insects.

This baby-roo is expected to take his first steps within the next few weeks. Eventually, like the rest of his species, he'll jump almost 30 feet in the air with ease.

The main threats to this kangaroo species' livelihood, according to the World Wildlife Fund, is habitat destruction and hunting. Loss of habitat has made them susceptible to "predation by domestic dogs."

The birth of this kangaroo brings hope against a major decline in the species' population.
