A Fox 9 News producer got a chance to explore a stunning seasonal phenomenon -- the Apostle Island ice caves on Lake Superior.

Time to see the ice caves for yourself is short. Seasonal access will close at 12:01 a.m. on Monday unless an extension is possible; however, park rangers plan to close the surface ice between Saxine Creek and Sand Point to all use.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

Visitors must be prepared to hike at least 2 miles round trip on ice, which can be dangerous. Wind and waves can break up ice and make it unstable, so visitors should call the Ice Line at 715-779-3397 and select extension 3 to ensure the caves are accessible before attempting a trip.

Given the uneven terrain, it is best to avoid making a trip alone; however, solitary explorers should let someone know a planned time of return.

WHAT TO BRING

- Layered clothing
- Supportive winter boots
- Crampons
- Ski poles
- A backpack with food, water, and a warm Thermos
- A first-aid kit
- A fully-charged cell phone
