Smartphone hunt for giant Easter eggs in NYC

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The Big Apple is hosting an old-fashioned Easter egg hunt using 21st century technology.

The public is invited to search for nearly 275 egg sculptures hidden around the city until April 26, 2014 using a smartphone app.

More than 200 designers and artists like Tommy Hilfiger, Diane von Furstenberg, Carolina Herrera and Jeff Koons designed the 2.5 foot tall eggs.

A free downloadable smartphone application allows the public to check in each time an egg is found.

The eggs' locations will remain secret until 10 people use the app to check in at an egg. At that point it will become public on an interactive map. Participants will be eligible for prizes.

At the end of the hunt, the eggs will be auctioned with a portion of the money raised going to Studio in a School, a children's non-profit that brings visual arts and professional artists to NYC public schools. The Elephant Family will also receive money raised for its fight to prevent the extinction of the Asian elephant.

In 2012, a similar egg hunt was held in London. Event organizers say 1 million people participated and more than $1.5M was raised.

If an iced coffee from Dunkin' Donuts is part of your afternoon routine, expect a nudge to buy a cookie or doughnut you didn't plan on. Dunkin' Brands CEO Nigel Travis said in a phone interview Thursday that the company is pushing to get its cashiers to "upsell" to afternoon customers. It's part of an effort to increase sales after stores have emptied out after the morning rush.
