OCALA, Fla. (WOGX FOX 51) -
An 87-year-old father is in critical condition after being beaten by a metal pipe and a sledgehammer. Ocala Police arrested his son, Allen Croskey, charging him with attempted second-degree murder.
According to police, Croskey, 55, came home from eating at a soup kitchen. He told police he and his father got into an argument over a broken vacuum cleaner. His dad told him to leave the house.
"Then, he came back and struck him in the head with a pipe, knocking him unconscious," said Ocala Police spokesperson Sergeant Angy Scroble. "He then took that sledgehammer and hit him in the head."
Police said that after the suspect beat his father with a sledgehammer, he dragged his body to some bushes thinking he was already dead.
"He's not doing good. He's in ICU and he's got brain damage," said the man's son-in-law, Joe Anderson. "It's very extensive, and right now he's in God's hands."
The elderly man remains in critical condition at the Ocala Regional Hospital.
Ocala Police is not saying who called 911 to report the beating. According to court records, Allen Croskey was in a mental hold twice in 2013. He has also been arrested multiple times in Marion County since 1995 on charges ranging from misdemeanors to felonies.
Croskey is being held at the Marion County jail with no bond. He's expected to appear in court Thursday morning.
