Hundreds sickened with stomach bug at NJ high school

NEW JERSEY (MYFOXNY.COM) -

More than 400 students and 50 staff members at Montclair High School in New Jersey were home sick this week after coming down with a stomach virus.

The highly contagious virus caused symptoms including nausea, vomiting, fever and diarrhea. School nurses described it as a "gastrointestinal illness."

The superintendent says the school was thoroughly sanitized by the custodial staff and would be again this weekend.

About 2,000 students attend the school. One student says only six students were in one of his classes on Thursday.

Doctors say stomach bugs like the norovirus or rotavirus are very hardy and can live outside the body on surfaces like water fountains and doorknobs for an extended period of time.

Patients are usually sick for 2-3 days and to stay hydrated.

Students and staff were told to stay home until they were 100 percent better.
