Pam Borton fired, Gophers begin search for new women's basketball coach

MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

University of Minnesota women's basketball coach Pam Borton was fired Friday, one day after the Gophers were eliminated from the WNIT tournament.

The Gophers were 236-152 in 12 seasons under Borton. She led the program to 6 NCAA tournament appearances, including a 2004 Final Four appearance.

"Pam has had many successful seasons at the University of Minnesota, but we feel it is time to look at another leader to position this program for long-term success," athletics director Norwood Teague said.

"I am grateful for my 12 seasons at the University of Minnesota," Borton said. "This is a great state and university, and I have enjoyed becoming a part of this community. I want to thank my players and staff over the years. We've accomplished a lot together and they have made the experience truly special. I want to give a special thanks to our current players and staff. They are a great group and I have enjoyed coaching and working with them every day."

Assistant coach Kelly Roysland has been named interim head coach, with a national search underway for Borton's successor.

Borton's contract was set to expire with the end of this season, but former athletics director Joel Maturi added two more years to her contract before his tenure ended in June 2012.
