Charges Filed Against Mom When Kids Left Home Alone During Fire

PHILADELPHIA -

This is the dramatic  video of neighbors and police frantically coming to the rescue of three little children trapped inside 1708 Newkirk Street after the home caught fire with a 9-year-old, a 4- year-old and a 2-year-old home alone.

"I just took a bat and poked the window out, my brother jumped in through the window started handing the kids out through the windows," neighbor Tyrone Mitchell told Fox 29.

"It could have been worse than that if we wasn't home. Could have burned them kids up," next door neighbor Levi Miles said.

Tyrone Mitchell and his brother Jarrett, along with neighbors like Levi Miles and police quickly removed the children from the burning home just before seven Thursday night. Tyrone used his metal bat to help  break out the front window.

"We not gonna sit here and let kids perish in a fire and there's all of us out here so broke the window out," he explained

"I'm glad we got them out of there safely," Miles added.

The children were treated for smoke inhalation and cuts at the hospital. Their mother, 31-year- old Lorraine Wilson, now stands charged with leaving her three kids home alone for hours..

"We have information that at least from twelve noon, yesterday, so we have an extensive period of time," said Captain John Darby of the Special Victims Unit.

"You cannot leave these kids home by theirselves, you can't do it," Mitchell said. "Especially with a dead bolt lock on."

Investigators say they don't know where Wilson was while the 9-year-old was watching his little brother and sister. One of the children was playing with a lighter when the fire started, according to police.

"She need to go to jail that's a shame. It's a shame," Miles said.

Darby says investigators believe the children had been left home alone before.

"This was not the first time that these children were left alone," Darby said. "Within a short period of time we could have very well had three fatalities. This could have been a catastrophe."

The children are now at an apartment with Wilson's relatives out of town.

"They're fine," a relative told Fox 29 from behind closed doors.

"If there's a fire, there's kids in the window, you gonna do what you gotta do to get those kids out the house," Mitchell said.

"We could have had a tragedy here, absolutely," Darby added.

The Department of Human Services is now investigating.

No word yet on exactly where the mother was for all those hours, or where she's been since the fire.
