Detonated explosive device found on elementary school playground

WASECA, Minn. (KMSP) -

A series of frightening discoveries were made at an elementary school playground in Waseca, Minn., last week after the remnants of several homemade explosive devices were found.

Waseca police confirmed that the first report came on Monday, March 24, after two small devices were found on the school's playground on the south side of the building. One had been detonated, but the other had failed to ignite, police said. Both devices appeared old and investigators say they may have been inside the melting snow.

Yet, the same type of homemade explosive was also found inside a damaged stuffed toy on the same playground on Friday. As with the first find, the device appeared old.

"They're sick," said 13-year old Mason Ewest. "Why would you want to do that, especially to little kids?"

No one was injured in either discovery, and according to police, the devices would have had to be lit by an open flame in order to detonate. Waseca School Superintendent Tom Lee wrote that evidence suggests the incident happened during the winter and not within the past few days.

While police admit the discovery frays the nerves, they don't have reason to believe whoever left the bombs on the playground intended to hurt a child.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Waseca Police Department at 507-835-9720 and ask to speak to an on-duty officer.

When it comes to drag racing, rocket-type speed is the name of the game -- but that also means things can go wrong very quickly, and a double crash at a Brainerd, Minn., track is another grim reminder.
