PHOENIX (AP) -- A man convicted of killing his mother and step-father nearly 50 years ago is now free after being granted clemency by Gov. Jan Brewer.

The Arizona Capitol Times reports that Brewer's October approval of a sentence reduction for 65-year-old Patrick Maloney set the stage for his March 20 release on parole.

Maloney was 16 years old at the time of the 1964 killings. He was sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole on a murder conviction.

Brewer reduced his sentence to 45 years to life.

Her proclamation granting sentence reduction doesn't explain her decision, and Brewer spokesman Andrew Wilder would say only that the decision wasn't based on prison time served by Maloney.

Brewer had a state board's recommendation nearly four years before she approved it.
