New World Record Set In Michigan Factory With 800 Rosie The Riveters

Posted: Updated:

Over 700 women gathered in historic Willow Run Bomber Plant to establish a new Guinness World Record. The Group only needed 250, but instead drew in 778.

The Rosie The Riveter record also serves to unite and empower women by reminding them of the "Rosies" from the mid-20th century that kept the U.S. economy afloat while men were fighting for their lives during World War II.

The record setters were able to save some of the artifacts from the historic plant that converted from an auto plant to help build and inspect bombers and airplanes.

One "Rosie" recalls her experience actually working at the plant for $.58 an hour.

"We heard that they're building this big plant here for the war and pretty soon they'll be hiring people to work in it," said Vivian Litchard, "so, my girlfriend and I across the street, her father took us to the Ford plant and we put our applications in and we were hired right then."

Guinness will now review the report on the event to see whether the record can be established. Until now, there has never been a Rosie the Riveter attendance record of any kind.

"You know it's too bad the Rosies weren't recognized maybe 10 years after the war so we could have an anniversary for it every 10 or 20 years, because people have really forgotten about that I believe until very recently," said Litchard.

Video games may be pure fantasy, but a violent action-adventure game called "Watch Dogs" has ignited a very real debate in one South Jersey community. Watch Dog allows players to adopt the persona of a James Bond-like computer hacker, chasing an evil mastermind. People say it's chock-full of foul language, sex and violence, features dark and foreboding backdrops. The latest version, which is due out this fall may be set in Camden.
