Alabama Community Says 'Welcome Home' To Vietnam Vets

Posted: Updated:

Officials in Alabama attempted to heal some wounds still felt by many of those who served in the Vietnam wars.

Saturday marked the "Welcome Home" day in Dothan, Alabama.

Many veteran's felt they didn't receive a warm welcome when they returned home 40 years ago.

Mayor Mike Schmitz says "my brother Bill served in Vietnam and he actually served 12 years in the army, and when he came home from Vietnam, he wasn't treated very well."

Schmitz says it was the perfect opportunity to express gratitude to not only his brother, but to all the Vietnam vets.

"I think it's fabulous it needs to be done all over the country. It's great to see my adopted hometown appreciate what we all did over there," says Vietnam veteran, Donald Stanton.

Those in attendance say events like this help heal haunting memories many veterans still have.

It's also a day to remember the dedication of America's veterans and let them know that people still care.
