Mountain Lion Stalks Young Boy

Mountain Lion Stalks Young Boy

An Orange County mom relives a terrifying moment. Madison smith says a mountain lion stalked her son.

On Sunday, they were hiking in Whiting Ranch Wilderness Park in Lake Forest when they heard a sound.

It was Smith's seven year old daughter who saw the cat first.

Madison Smith recalls, ""she jumped up and said kitty! She was very excited and I said no this isn't a nice kitty!  She had no idea. None of the kids realized how dangerous the animal was."

Then it started moving toward her son.

Fortunately, another hiker was coming down the hill and came to their rescue.

She continues, "He had a large stick and just was incredibly brave. [He] jumped in between my son and the mountain lion and just started fighting him off, doing everything you're supposed to do to let the mountain lion know who's in charge."

But she says the mountain lion crouched, hissed and wouldn't give up.

There are warning signs about mountain lions in several wilderness parks in the area.

State wildlife officials say when the cat lunged at a wildlife official it was killed.

"In this case it was a one year old male. Lions will stay with their mom till they're one and a half to two years old, so that lion was still dependent whether it was abandoned, or something happened to its mom, it's hard to say," explains Dan Sforza  of California Dept Of Fish And Wildlife.
