NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

A soldier from western New York was wounded in the Fort Hood, Texas, shooting Wednesday, according to N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Maj. Patrick Miller, of Allegany, a small community along the Allegheny River, underwent surgery Wednesday evening, according to a report.

"The shooting at Fort Hood has left New York saddened and shocked at the senseless violence that claimed the lives of dedicated soldiers and injured 16 others," Cuomo said in a statement. "I join the nation in mourning the loss of those Americans who demonstrated great patriotism in serving their country."

Miller attended St. Bonaventure University, where he went through the ROTC program, and was commissioned as an officer in the Army after graduation in 2003.

A soldier identified as Spc. Ivan Lopez opened fire on other troops at Fort Hood, killing three, and then turned the gun on himself when a military police officer confronted him, the military said.

President Barack Obama is going on a fundraising sweep through New York and Rhode Island as he continues to help Democrats raise money for November's elections. Obama headlines three events on Friday. Two in Westchester County, and the third is in Newport, Rhode Island. The New York fundraisers will benefit the Democratic National Committee, which is still paying off debt from the 2012 campaign season.
