DETROIT (WJBK) - A mother and her two children are the first in Michigan to face a harsher sentencing for arson after a new amendment to the state's arson law.

Rita Johnson, Darryl Floyd and Olivia Floyd have been convicted of burning their property in June of 2013 after they took out an insurance policy on the home. Johnson and her daughter Olivia were found guilty of Arson of Insured Dwelling, which can carry a life sentencing. They both were also, along with Darryl, found guilty of Arson Second Degree, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years.

Darryl apparently tipped off investigators.

"He ran up on my investigator and caused a little bit of a threat, like, 'Why are you telling them my name?' and that was suspicious. And that's what clued them in, 'Oh, there might be something more going on,'" says Patrick McNulty, Detroit arson.

Turns out the investigator was right.

The family had set fire to their east-side Detroit home on Devonshire not once - but twice.

Arson investigators are getting more aggressive, increasing man power and getting more funding. Two prosecutors are now assigned to arson cases.

The family will be sentenced in May.
