MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Advocates present Dayton with petition

Posted: Updated:

Less than 24 hours after unveiling a television ad that criticizes Gov. Mark Dayton for standing in the way of medical marijuana legislation, advocates delivered a petition with 5,000 signatures to his office.

Several parents of children suffering from debilitating illnesses gathered at the Capitol for the delivery -- including Angela Garin, the St. Paul mother who appeared in the advertisement produced by the Marijuana Policy Project.

Garin and other parents presented Dayton with the signatures collected via MoveOn.org, but the governor didn't seem ready to budge from his compromise to launch a trial on a marijuana chemical at Mayo Clinic.

"I think this approach, which is trying to make the most promising medicine identified -- which is a marijuana derivative -- available to children which suffer from suffer from seizures, which has been in the limited studies so far or that have been the most effective," Dayton said. "Even then, only 20 percent of the kids have been helped, but if we can help 20 percent of 1,200 kids, that's well worth doing -- but so far, there's not any support for that."

Advocates argue that the trial won't start fast enough or help enough patients, which leaves the next step for the medical marijuana push up in the air. The bill's author pulled it from a House committee citing a dead-end with law enforcement.
