SEPTA, Unions Negotiating To Avoid Possible Shutdown

SEPTA, Unions Negotiating To Avoid Possible Shutdown

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

SEPTA officials say some progress is being made and the sides are discussing a two-year deal.

But the clock is ticking towards a possible shutdown of nearly all mass transit in Southeast Pennsylvania if a deal is not reached.

Negotiations resume Friday morning between SEPTA and a union representing the transit service's employees.

Contracts affecting some workers have already expired, but a final pact runs out this weekend. The unsettled negotiations have some customers frustrated.

"I think they should be thankful for what they have, because you have people out here making minimum wage, 7,8, 9 dollars an hour, can't afford to put food on their own table and these guys are crying making 24, 27 dollars an hour. I'd say go ahead, strike.

At this time, the union has not voted to authorize a strike, which means employees could go to work Monday if no contract is signed.

But if a strike does happen, only the Regional Rail, Para-Transit and University Loop would still be in service.

FOX 29's Steve Keeley reported live Friday morning from Center City with the latest.
