Skirting the law? Some bars not displaying obligatory `no guns` sign

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There's training for people who want to carry guns, but what the about bar and tavern owners who are supposed to post signs keeping gun-toting customers out? Some of them apparently haven't gotten the message.

The Hot City Cocktail Lounge on Chicago's South Side has signs telling its customers they have to be 30 years old and that absolutely no low-hanging pants are allowed. But the Lounge doesn't have a sign banning customers with concealed carry permits from bringing their guns inside.

The same goes for Keegan's Pub in Evergreen Park, O'Brien's Pub and McNally's, both right down the street.

It's been three months since Illinois' new concealed carry law required bars to post these signs, but individuals at all four establishments told FOX 32 they either weren't aware of the law, or just hadn't gotten around to getting a sign.

Gun control advocate Colleen Daley says ignorance could be one excuse, but she also believes some pub owners fear that posting the signs will make it look like their taking a stand on a controversial issue, offending their patrons.

"It is amazing, most people don't know much about this law," Daley says. "They just don't want to be involved, but we tell them, unfortunately, the general assembly has involved you."

Father Michael Pfleger church is a few blocks from the Hot City Cocktail Lounge. He says gun-toting customers might mistakenly assume they're allowed inside the bars which don't post the gun bans.

"People assume if they don't see a sign up, that they can bring a gun anywhere," Pfleger says.

But a customer at one nightclub predicted that the signs won't make much of a difference.

"Okay, well that's a good thing, they can have them in there, but like I say, they gonna have them anyway," costumer Donnie Cross says. "They're going to carry the guns anyway."

The concealed carry law also requires college campuses to post such signs and our random check today found that universities in the Chicago area do seem to have gotten the message.
