Senate passes measure extending timeframe on prosecuting rape

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Illinois lawmakers want to give police more time to go after rapists.

FOX 32 has reported on the outrage of rape kits with potential DNA evidence sitting untested on police department shelves. In many cases, the statute of limitations expired long before the kits were discovered.

A new bill would delay the start of the clock on rape cases until after the kits are analyzed. Currently, it starts when the crime is committed.

The bill passed the Senate on Monday and is on its way to the State House of Representatives.
