Student Accused Of Bringing Homemade Chemical Device To Feltonville School

FELTONVILLE, Pa. -

There were frightening moments for dozens of middle school students at Feltonville School of Arts and Sciences after a homemade bomb exploded inside their school on Wednesday, according to school officials.

Police say no one was injured, but a male 8th grade student has been arrested, suspended from school with intent to expel for allegedly bringing a homemade bomb into the building.

"Everybody screamed and ran," one student said.

A letter was sent home to parents describing the incident. Officials say it exploded in an inner courtyard, and ingredients for a second device were found in the bathroom of the 5th through 8th grade middle school. Students were evacuated, and police and firefighters were called to the scene.

"I thought it was fire drill," school neighbor Jose Gerena said.

School district officials acknowledge the incident; however, they took issue with the use of the word bomb.

"It turns out to be plastic bottles with household chemicals in there with a metal inside to make some sort of reaction," school spokesperson Fernado Gallard said, "The idea would be to create fumes or something of that type."

When Fox 29 arrived at the school, three young boys were being escort to a police car. They were driven away, but it's not known why. The principal would not talk to us; however, a special ed teacher did.

"Not enough people to supervise the kids and not enough people to help the kids who are having issues with things," Ray Parreca said.
