Family thinks teen was purposefully hit by car after neighborhood fight

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A teen riding her bicycle was hit by a woman driving a van near the area of Lahser Road and Santa Clara Street on Detroit's northwest side. The victim's family says they know who the driver is, and that she may have ran the girl over intentionally because of a recent feud between the two families.

Deirdre Haney says the tension started two days ago when a neighbor reported her dog missing. The two then got in a heated argument, apparently ending when Haney got into a physical altercation with the woman. Haney's son, Devon Palazzola, tells FOX 2's Ron Savage he was there when it happened.

Then, on Friday, Devon was riding with his bike with his 19-year-old sister when he says they saw that neighbor drive up in her white van. Devon says the van almost hit him before swerving over and hitting his sister.

"I [saw] my sister on top of the car and [the driver] pulled off and she was like, 'I thought you all [were] going to do something!'" Devon tells Savage. He says he chased the van, which pulled into a driveway about a block down.

That's when a man with a gun ran out of the house. Devon says the man shot at him several times, then a woman jumped out of the van and also started shooting. He was not struck, but says a bullet whizzed by his face and almost hit his eye.

Haney says the driver knew who her daughter was because her daughter was also involved in the argument.

The daughter remains in the hospital Friday night in serious condition. Her family says she in conscious and talking but doctors want to do more tests before releasing her.

Police are investigating.
