MOUNT HOLLY, N.J. -

Prosecutors say they have charged a Florence Township woman with trying to kill her three teenage children by driving into the Delaware River.

According to authorities, Joann smith, 49, of the 2000 block of Burlington-Columbus road, was charged with three counts of attempted murder and three counts of endangering the welfare of children.

The investigation revealed that Smith was driving on West Front Street at approximately 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday night with her children, who are ages, 15, 14 and 13, when she allegedly drove onto a boat ramp and into the water.

Police say the investigation also showed that the van accelerated and headed directly into the water.

A man in the area helped Smith and her children escape from the partially submerged vehicle and make it safely back to the shoreline.

One of the children sustained cuts to a leg, and Smith was checked into a medical facility for evaluation, authorities say.

The incident is still under investigation.

Her bail was set at $600,000. She is expected to have her first appearance in superior court in Mount Holly on Thursday.
