Investigators with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office said they will not be filing charges against a woman whose husband died from a gunshot wound over the weekend.
The incident happened around 3 a.m. at a home on Seabreeze Drive in Ormond-by-the-Sea on Sunday morning.Deputies said Sanford Olson, 55, was found lying on a bed with a gun beside him.
Investigators responded to the home after a neighbor called 911, saying a woman was banging on her door and asking for help.Deputies said the woman, Doris Barrells, 57, has been cooperating in the case.
"I ran next door, and I can tell you I did say, 'I killed him, I killed him.' I don't know why I said that, because I didn't," Barrells told FOX 35.
She said her husband called for her in the middle of the night. When she came into the room, she said she thought he was going to kill himself.
"He hollered for me to come in there, and then, when I went in there, I attacked, I jumped to try to get the gun away from him," she said.
In a panic, she said she didn't hear the gun discharge.
"I didn't even know the clip was in it. I just knew he had a gun, and I was going to get it away from him," she added. "I grabbed a hold of his shoulders, and then I realized there was blood all over."
Deputies are still trying to piece together what happened before that fatal shot was fired, but said early autopsy results show no wrong-doing in olson's death.
"I'm the only person who's ever taken care of that guy, and I would never kill my husband."
