Arrest after Brooklyn deli clerk set on fire

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The NYPD has made an arrest after a store clerk inside of a Brooklyn mini-mart was set ablaze when an enraged sicko threw a Molotov Cocktail into the store.

The attack happened just before 2 a.m. on Wednesday at the store on Fort Hamilton Parkway in Borough Park.

The 34-year-old store clerk had his hair and coat catch fire in the attack. He was not seriously burned.

Approximately an hour before the incident, the suspect walked into the 24 hour mini-mart and started an argument with the clerk.  Fox 5 News reported that the man had wanted to set up a store-credit account for cigarettes.

He left and came back with the flaming bottle.

Police say they arrested Charles Diaz, 35, of Brooklyn on Thursday.  He is charged with attempted murder, assault, arson and criminal possession of a weapon.

Heavy thunderstorms swept through the tri-state on Sunday causing flash floods and lightning strikes that injured 3 people. The three men were struck at Orchard Beach in the Bronx Sunday afternoon and were being treated at a local hospital. Meanwhile, various Labor Day weekend celebrations were interrupted, delayed and even canceled as the U.S. Open tennis tournament had to be postponed and the Electric Zoo musical festival on Randall's Island had to be prematurely shut down.
