MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Senate committee passes amendment for study

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

The Minnesota Senate Health, Human Services and Housing Committee has passed an amendment to the medical marijuana bill, S.F.1641, calling for a health impact study by the commissioner of health.

The amendment, which passed on a 7-3 vote, was brought to the table by Sen. Julie Rosen (R-Vernon Center), asking specifically for a study on the potential impacts of medical marijuana on healthcare providers and drug abuse.

Rosen said much of the language for her amendment comes from Gov. Mark Dayton's proposal for a marijuana study by Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Sue Sisley, a medical marijuana researcher at the University of Arizona, said any idea of a quick medical study in Minnesota is a "fantasy." Sisley told the committee she's been working for 3 years to get federal permission to conduct her own medical marijuana study on veterans with post-traumatic stress.

Sisley advised senators that it would be wise to pass a bill to co-exist with drug research.
