Man arrested trying to get daughter with cerebral palsy onto NJ beach

BRADLEY BEACH, N.J. (AP) - An Ohio man is awaiting a verdict after a day at a New Jersey beach ended with his arrest.

Charles Placa is charged with criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and defiant trespass.

It all started when the 59-year-old consulting engineer from Milford, Ohio, tried to get the key for the wheelchair ramp in Bradley Beach so he could get his 24-year-old daughter on the sand in July. She has cerebral palsy.

The Asbury Park Press reports Placa on Thursday testified he went to a beach hut, opened the door and asked for the key.

But Vivian Cytryn, 72, who was working as a cashier in the hut, testified she thought Placa was breaking into the structure.

“I was petrified,” she said. “I had money in there. I thought he was coming in to rob me. … He said to me, ‘Where is the (expletive) key for the ramp?’ ”

Charles Placa testified he never cursed at Cytryn. “The only thing I told Vivian was, I was disappointed what a parent has to go through to get his daughter on the beach,’’ he said.

The judge will reach a verdict after attorneys submit summations within three weeks.
