CLAY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - Police say the body of a newborn has been found in a shallow grave in St. Clair County by a person doing yard work.

Clay Township police Chief Don Drake tells FOX 2's Robin Schwartz the remains of the child were found about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

Drake says the body has been sent to the medical examiner's office. The sex of the baby is unknown at this time, or if the baby was born alive.

Investigators are asking the child's mother, or other family members, to come in to talk with authorities.

The chief is using this opportunity to remind people of the options if a baby is unable to be cared for, including bringing the baby to the police or fire department no questions asked.

Clay Township is located about 35 miles northeast of Detroit. Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the police department.
