MEDICAL MARIJUANA: Bill faces tough path in Minn. Senate

ST. PAUL, Minn. (KMSP) -

Sen. Scott Dibble's medical marijuana bill, S.F. 1641, passed the State and Local Government Committee on a voice vote late Tuesday morning, with a next stop in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

LIMITS + OVERSIGHT

Sen. Dibble (DFL-Minneapolis) said his medical marijuana bill would only allow patients to get their drugs from a single dispensary to prevent "shopping" among outlets. The bill gives the state health commissioner very defined oversight, including the power to add medical conditions eligible for medical marijuana.

“This bill allows doctors and patients to best meet their healthcare needs,” Sen. Branden Petersen (R-Andover) said. "I have yet to hear a compelling reason why we can't move forward on this."

INTRACTABLE PAIN

S.F. 1641 lists "intractable pain" as part of the conditions for allowing someone to use medical marijuana. Intractable pain is a legal definition described in state statue (152.125) as pain that doesn't respond to traditional treatments.
