Dirt Bike Sting

ATLANTA, Ga. -

You don't have to love dirt bike racing to love this investigation.

For years, crooks have targeted innocent owners hoping to sell their dirt bike on Craigslist. The scam was clever and it's been spreading.

One victim shows Fox 5 I-Team reporter Randy Travis how he fought back and outwitted the bad guys.

Here's some advice from police and victims if you're thinking about selling a vehicle to a stranger:

  1. Meet at police station parking lot to do the transaction
  2. Get cash in hand before letting someone go for solo test drive
  3. Take a picture of potential buyer before allowing a solo test drive
  4. Also, authorities advise you to contact them first if you feel you've been a theft victim.
  5. Don't try to get your stolen property back on your own. You could make a bad situation even worse.
