Family Concerned For Safety Due To Black Bear Encounters

Posted: Updated:

Seminole County, FL- A Florida man says a black bear is terrorizing his family.

They even installed a fence to keep the bear out of their yard, but says the bear just tore it down.

Now they fear for their safety.

Homeowner Jose Tormos came face-to face with a huge black bear at the window about 6-weeks-ago when he was changing his baby's diaper.

"It was literally this big, and its hands hit the window it just started bowing the windows with its shoulders, trying to break in," he said. "I grabbed the gun and I came around the corner outside.”

Tormos says when he pointed the gun at the bear, it started to chomp its teeth and wouldn’t leave.

Luckily, Jasmine, the family dog, came to the rescue and ran off the bear.

The family was terrified for their children's safety, so they ripped out all their citrus trees and installed an aluminum fence around their home.

However, Tormos met a huge black bear the other night for the second time in just two months.

"It bent this, it snapped this completely off right here, you can see the entire aluminum fence here completely snapped," he said. "Face in here, in and its hand was ripping, and just trying to do this, until I came around the corner and my dog came out and chased it out."

The family lives in the Lake Forest community, which borders the Wekiva Nature Preserve. The preserve is home to nearly 1/3rd of Florida’s black bear population.

Tormos says moving away could be the only option.

"It's not worth every single night wondering, are we going to have a black bear that's 300-400 pounds breaking into our home and trying to attack our children?"
