Police chase ends with crash in Mt. Clemens, officer injured

MT. CLEMENS, Mich. (WJBK) - A police chase in Mt. Clemens ended with a crash Friday afternoon, injuring a Macomb County deputy.

Macomb Co. Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says the chase began when a squad car pulled over a Ford Mustang for a registration plate violation. When the deputy got out of his vehicle, the Mustang took off.

Authorities say the driver then lead police on a chase, reaching speeds of approximately 70 miles per hour along Canfield Street. The driver is also said to have failed to stop at a stop sign, and even ran over a different stop sign.

The driver eventually crossed over to the southbound side of Gratiot Avenue, where it struck a sheriff's vehicle head-on that was attempting to block the roadway.

The crash caused the Mustang to roll-over and the sheriff's car was spun around.

The Mustang was being driven by a 43-year-old parolee who was wearing a tether. A 20-year-old woman was also in the vehicle. They are both at an area hospital for treatment. The extent of the injuries was not made available at this time.

The sheriff deputy was also taken to an area hospital for treatment of his non life-threatening injuries. The deputy is an eight-year veteran of the force.
