FISHING OPENER: Minnesota's lakes won't be ice-free again

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

This is the second year in a row that Minnesota’s lakes won’t all be officially ice-free for the fishing opener.

Minnesota's Walleye Fishing Opener is Saturday, May 10, 2014 this year -- when walleye, northern pike, and sauger become legal game on the state's inland waters.

WHAT’S ICE-OUT?

According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, “the definition of lake ice-out varies from lake to lake, and individual to individual. For some, ice out occurs only when the lake is completely free of ice. For others, ice out is defined as the moment when navigation is possible from point A to point B. And yet for others, ice out is when 90 percent of the lake is ice free.”
