Atlanta Zoo Says Farewell To Giant Pandas

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta-GA-Atlanta residents are saying farewell to two giant pandas that are set to go to a breeding facility in China to begin the repopulating process.

Many people are flocking to the zoo to get one last glimpse of the playful pandas named Po and Xi Lan.

They are brother and sister and were born at the Atlanta Zoo.

In just a few years Po will have cubs, which will add to the diminishing population of giant pandas.

Though they are embarking on a remarkable journey, zookeepers say it's a bitter-sweet send-off.

"We're going miss them, of course. They were born here. We've known them their entire lives. We've watched them grow up. We love them," one zookepper said. "Exactly, yeah, they are of that age where they need to move out and move on with their lives."

Zoo officials say Po and Xi Lan are unlikely to return to Atlanta.
