Camden Cab Drivers Concerned For Safety After Robberies

Posted: Updated:
CAMDEN, N.J. -

Cab drivers say they're nervous about driving at night, following a string of recent robberies inside taxis.

Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser reports.

“I can't control everything,” cab driver Francisco Herrara said.

Herrara has been driving a cab in Camden for 20 years, and he's been robbed at gunpoint twice.

So when word that one cabbie had been robbed Monday and another narrowly avoided being ripped off, he started thinking how dangerous his job is.

“People give me a gun to my head, give me the money, my money over here, right here,” he said.

Police say a female cab driver arriving at the 1100 block of North 24 Street to pick up a passenger was greeted instead by three men with a gun. They pulled her from her cab and robbed her, she said.

An hour later and four blocks away at North 21st and Pierce, another cabbie told police he was approached by several teens. One wearing a mask, who took out a gun and tapped on his window, at that point the cabbie drove away, according to police.

Myeisha Scott has been driving a cab for just two weeks now. She expected the job to be dangerous, but she was still unnerved by word of the two incidents involving fellow drivers being confronted by gun toting bandits.

Several cabbies told Fox 29 they try to avoid the dangers of driving a cab by working days instead of nights. Still, they're always careful about who they pick up.

Police believe the two incidents are related. Francisco Herrara says if someone tried to rob him, he simply turns over the money, he says it's not worth losing his life over a few bucks.

Police still searching for suspects tonight in the robberies.
