Graphic sculpture upsets Long Island village

A 33-foot bronze sculpture of a nude pregnant woman has upset a Long Island village.

The statue, "The Virgin Mother," by British artist Damien Hirst has an exposed fetus, skull and tissue.

It sits on a conservation easement of the historic Old Westbury estate of real estate mogul Aby Rosen.

‘The Virgin Mother’ is a 33-foot, thirteen-ton bronze sculpture, cast at Pangolin Editions foundry, in Gloucester. The work, which Hirst has rendered in a variety of different editions, can be considered a female version to Hirst’s monumental ‘Hymn’. This first edition includes a painted anatomical cross section. The figure’s stance recalls Edgar Degas’s ‘Little Dancer of Fourteen Years’. Hirst explains the significance of the reference to Degas: “It is kind of naughty; she shouldn't really be pregnant. I wanted a feeling of that. Anyone who is pregnant looks old enough, that's the problem.”

Newsday says the village has strict rules regulating easements. A hearing on the issue is set for May 19.

It previously sat in the courtyard at Lever House in mid-Manhattan.

Rosen is being sued by the New York Landmarks Conservancy over his plan to move a Picasso painting it owns from The Four Seasons Restaurant in Manhattan. The restaurant is in the Seagram Building owned by Rosen's company, RFR Holding Corp.

A Long Island family is upset that a cruise line won't accommodate them after their 5-year-old son had to have emergency surgery for cancer. Nicolas Colucci and the rest of his family was supposed to go on a cruise on the Norwegian Breakaway. They did not buy travel insurance, so Norwegian says they cannot rebook the cruise so close to departure.
