An abortion clinic counselor who is a former actress filmed her abortion, declaring: "I'm not ready to have children."
Now that video has going viral.
"Hey I'm pregnant," she says in the video.
Emily Letts, 25, said she just wanted to "share my story" in an effort to remove the stigma surrounding abortion.
"I just wanted to show there's such a thing as a positive abortion story," she says.
She filmed it at he Cherry Hill Women's Center on Kings Highway, where she works. She wrote about the video for Cosmopolitan's online site.
Letts told Cosmopolitan that she believes there's a lot of misinformation about abortion: "Women come into the clinic all the time terrified that they are going to be cut open, convinced that they won't be able to have kids after the abortion. The misinformation is amazing, but think about it: They are still willing to sacrifice these things because they know that they can't carry the child at this moment."
The video has garnered a strong, and at times angry reaction. The second comment on Cherry Hill Patch stated: "We always knew that televised executions would eventually carry the day. The only thing is...normally the perpetrator of some crime is executed while in this case an innocent is executed..." Read More...
The 25 year-old chose to go on Chasing New Jersey last night to discuss her decision to make the video and how she’s feeling now that it’s out and gained so much attention. The video has since seen over 500,000 views and counting.
“I never said it was all about me, I said that this was my experience and I’m sharing this experience. That’s something that a lot of people are misunderstanding, as a counselor I speak this vocabulary, I do not speak for everyone. I’ve seen the grief, I’ve seen the loss, I’ve seen the tears, I’ve seen the sweats,” she explained.
Letts went on to clarify how she would explain this video to her kids if she chooses to have them in the future.
“I would sit them around the camp fire and be like ladies and gentleman of the court, here’s what abortion is if you ever find yourself pregnant. Let’s talk about birth control, let’s talk about sexual education, let’s talk about the three choices if you have an unplanned pregnancy: abortion, adoption and birth. Three choices, all of them equally good, I do not judge you for any one that you do, just come to me and I will hug you,” she explained.
Many people seem to be upset that Letts actually celebrated after the procedure was done, while it’s believed that so many women find it to be a traumatic experience.
“I did celebrate it because I felt relief after it. The majority of people who have abortions do feel relief after, that is the most common, and yet so many women feel like they’ve done something wrong, they feel guilty, they feel like they cannot tell anyone, they’re shamed into silence, I do not believe that is correct,” Letts said.
She also explained that the father of her fetus was not involved in her decision to have an abortion.
“It is my body, if I cared to term that child that would be my child and I would take care of it and I would be an amazing mother if I so decided to have a child, that time is not right now. He is not aware of it and I do not think that men have the right to say yes or no to what a woman wants to do with her reproductive system,” Letts asserted.
To be clear, the 25 year-old says that she is “pro-choice” not necessarily “pro-abortion”.
“The film celebrates MY abortion, it celebrates the fact that we have access to safe, legal abortions and a woman has a right to choose, that’s all that is, it’s my experience,” Letts concluded.
