CPL instructor stops car break-in, holds suspect

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - A witness to an attempted car break-in stopped the crime and held the suspects at gunpoint until police arrived.

Three suspects were trying to break into a woman's car outside the daycare she works on W. McNichols Road Thursday. A man across the street saw what was happening, ran over and intervened.

"When I came across [the street] they were both getting in the car to take off. [The] one that was in the driver's side, he took off and I caught the one that was in the passenger's side and I made him get on the ground," says the witness, who is a CPL instructor and holder. He wished to remain anonymous.

Jackie Smith, the owner of the car, went outside when she learned what was going on across the street and says she couldn't believe what she was seeing.

They say police arrived in about 30 minutes, which the witness says gave him time to have a conversation with the suspect.

"I asked him why he wasn't in school, so he said he can make more money out of school. So I told him, 'Well, can you make any money going to jail?'" the witness tells FOX 2's Taryn Asher.

The suspect was handcuffed and taken away by police. His alleged accomplices were able to get away.

Smith says the witness is a "Godsend".
