Detroiters 'Ride for Respect' on Belle Isle

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT (WJBK) - Bicyclists held a peaceful protest Friday evening on Belle Isle, claiming disrespectful treatment by police since the state takeover of the island.

"Citizens who come out to bike, to jog and just enjoy the island have to worry about whether or not they're going to be arrested, ticketed or otherwise infringed on," says Ron Scott. He organized the 'Ride for Respect'.

The DNR website's tracking statistics show conservation officers, who are police and state troopers, have made arrests for people with warrants on Belle Isle.

Meanwhile, others believe the park is better and safer than it's been in years.

"When we make contact with somebody that's violated the motor vehicle code, we're going to ask the same question we would ask anybody and that's [to show] driver's license, registration and insurance. Now, if you don't have a driver's license, then yeah, we're going to look into that further," says Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw.

Shaw maintains the state has changed no rules or regulations since the City of Detroit operated Belle Isle.

However, now that the island is a state park it will close as all state parks do every night at 10 p.m.
