MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

A 9-year-old Minneapolis girl is spending her birthday in the hospital, and likely losing her eyesight, after police said the SUV she was riding in was targeted in a shooting.

Two men have been charged with first-degree assault in a domestic violence incident on Mother's Day that ultimately left the innocent young girl seriously injured.

THE SHOOTING

On May 11, Minneapolis police officers were called to Hennepin County Medical Center after learning an SUV was en route with a seriously injured person inside. Once at the hospital, officers found the SUV with three small children were inside. The car had a broken windshield and side window damage.

The investigation determined the damage was the result of a domestic situation near the 4200 block of Irving Avenue North.

Diontre Hill, 21, apparently told Angela Carter to meet him in a nearby alley and appeared to stall, she said, and asked her whether she had damaged another woman’s car. Carter denied the allegation, and Hill made a phone call. Immediately after, Myles Estes, 20, began running toward her car accusing her of damaging the other woman’s car. Hill did not intervene. Carter drove away with four children inside as Estes fired at the car, smashing out a side window.

One of the children, 9-year-old Anaia Callender, screamed that she couldn’t see and police said had glass shards lodged in her eye. A bullet may have also grazed her head. Carter said her daughter's first surgery went well but will likely need a few more. A fund has been set up at U.S. Bank, and donations will go toward medical costs.

Hill and Estes have each been charged with first-degree assault. Both are in custody.
