Mich. woman, 20, recovering from preventative double mastectomy

ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WJBK) - A 20-year-old Ann Arbor woman who was the youngest to get a preventive double mastectomy at Beaumont Hospital is now recovering at home.

Kelly Rothe was 9 when her mom died from breast cancer. Then she saw breast cancer take her aunt's life as well.

When Kelly tested posted for the breast cancer gene, putting her at high risk for the disease, she wanted to launch an offensive strike and have her breasts removed. Her doctor tried to talk her out of it but did not prevail.

Kelly was confident and persistent and had the surgery on Friday.
"So, when I first saw myself after the surgery I kind of looked down and I was expecting the Texas Chain Saw Massacre - and I saw myself. I saw what I'm used to. Yeah, a little flatter, a little smaller, but it was still my skin. I still have the same birthmark; I still have the same freckle. It's all there," she tells FOX 2's Deena Centofanti.

She says she was eager to share her story because she has a chance to make a difference.

She has about six weeks of recovery from this procedure. Then, in August, she goes through reconstruction surgery right around her 21st birthday which will begin another recovery process.
